The Ringstrasse is a wide street surrounding the old city, Vienna’s 1st District. This 4 km long street was created after the city walls were razed from 1858 to 1865. In the second half of the 19th century construction of the monumental buildings, such as the Opera House and Parliament, began and the Ringstrasse Architectural Style created what is known as Historicism: Classical style next to Gothic or Renaissance or Baroque. The Ringstrasse architects were Heinrich Ferstel, Theophil van Hansen, Karl von Hasenauer, Eduard van der Nüll, Friedrich von Schmidt, Gottfried Semper, August von Siccardsburg.
