Vienna is a bicycle-friendly city. Many major streets have bike paths, making bicycling an easy and fast way to get around town. For example, the entire Ringstrasse has bicycle paths, which make biking an excellent way to see Vienna. However, it should be noted that places such as Graben and Kärnterstrasse, as well as Mariahilferstrasse, can get quite crowded with pedestrians, which could make cycling a bit of a logistical problem in those areas.
Vienna even has a “City Bike” program, with bicycle stations located throughout the city where one can rent a bike for up to 120 hours. The program requires a one-time registration which then allows the user to go to any City Bike terminal, swipe a credit card/bank card in the machine and borrow one of the bicycles. The first hour is free; thereafter it costs €1 for the second hour, €2 hours for the third hour. After 4 hours, the price increases to €4 for every started hour. Bicycles can be returned at any City Bike terminal, simply by putting the bike into a free “bike box. |
