The name of the Ballhausplatz refers to a former "Ball House" opposite the secret Chancellory, where a kind of indoor tennis was played in the 18th century. Ballhausplatz is linked with 250 years of Austrian politics that were "brewed" in the secret Chancellery. Today it is called the Federal Chancellery (the seat of the Foreign Ministry).
